Matawai to Gisborne via Rere Falls and Eastwoodhill
This two day escape combining nature, food and wine starts in the hills and travels over 95 – 100 km of quiet rural roads down towards Gisborne. The tour takes you via the fabulous Rere rockslide and falls, Eastwoodhill Arboretum, the national arboretum of New Zealand, and some of Gisborne’s finest wineries. Spend a tranquil night at Eastwoodhill, take a tour, read a book and enjoy the relaxed pace of this spectacular tour.
Meet and greet at the Gisborne Cycle Tour Company. We’ll set up your bike to ensure optimum comfort on your ride. You’ll be provided with a packed lunch for the first day, safety gear, daily riding instructions, a local area map and information on suggested sightseeing options and activities for the duration of your stay. You and your bike will be transferred to Matawai where you will be dropped off at the start point for this ride. From here you make your way to Te Wera Rd where you turn left and begin you journey back to Gisborne via the Rere rockslide and falls. This 60 meter long natural slide on the Wharekopae River is a great little adrenalin rush for those who love a buzz. From the rockslide it’s a short ride to the Rere falls and picnic area. After Rere falls there’s a few small climbs to work up an appetite for dinner. On arrival at Eastwoodhill you can take a stroll around the arboretum or just relax in the beautiful surrounds.
Your bags will be waiting for you at Eastwoodhill. Freshen up and enjoy your dinner either outdoors in the garden or indoors in the welcoming dining room.
Help yourself to a hearty breakfast before heading out for a walk around the arboretum. Eastwoodhill, the National Arboretum of New Zealand has the largest botanical collection of Northern Hemisphere plants south of the equator and is truly a sight to see in autumn and spring.
When you’re ready get on your bike and change the pace as you head down hill and into luscious Gisborne wine country. The itinerary includes two wineries and a vineyard platter for lunch. Hopefully you will slow down after the exhilarating decent of Ngatapa hill to visit Kirkpatrick Estate winery before meandering in through the back roads via award winning wineries such as Millton, Spade Oak, Matawhero and Bushmere Estate to Gisborne or call for a pick up at any point.
