This two day escape combining nature, gourmet food and wine starts in the hills and travels, mainly downhill over 65 – 70 km of quiet rural sealed roads. The tour takes you via the fabulous Rere rockslide and falls, Eastwoodhill Arboretum, the national arboretum of New Zealand, and some of Gisborne’s finest wineries. Spend a tranquil night at Eastwoodhill, take a tour, read a book and enjoy the pace of this spectacular tour.
Day One: Downhill ride via Rere to Eastwoodhill Arboretum (27km)
Meet and greet at the Gisborne Cycle Tour Company shop. We’ll set up your bike to ensure optimum comfort on your ride. You’ll be provided with safety gear, daily riding instructions, a local area map and information on suggested sightseeing options and activities for the duration of your stay. A quick lesson on basic repairs and bike adjustments is provided. You’ll be driven inland to the top of Wharekopae Road, the start point for this ride. From here you meander your way down the pretty rural Wharekopae Road via the Rere rockslide. This 60 metre long natural slide on the Wharekopae River is a great little adrenalin rush for those who love a buzz. From the rockslide it’s a short ride to the Rere falls and picnic area. Enjoy a long gourmet Gisborne Cycle Tour picnic lunch. After lunch there’s a few small climbs to work off the lunch and cycle up an appetite for dinner. On arrival at Eastwoodhill you can enjoy a jeep or walking tour around the arboretum or just relax in the beautiful surrounds.
Your bags will be waiting for you at Eastwoodhill. Freshen up and enjoy your dinner either outdoors in the garden or indoors in the welcoming dining room.
Day Two: Wine Trail from Eastwoodhill Arboretum to the Sea (35 – 45km)
Help yourself to a hearty breakfast before heading out for a walk around the arboretum. Eastwoodhill, the National Arboretum of New Zealand has the largest botanical collection of Northern Hemisphere plants south of the equator and is truly a sight to see in Autumn and Spring.
When you’re ready get on your bike and change the pace as you head down hill and into the luscious Gisborne wine country. The itinerary can include as many wineries as you have time for. Hopefully you will slow down after the exhilarating decent of Ngatapa hill to visit KEW winery before meandering in through the back roads to Gisborne. Indulge in a vineyard platter at either KEW, Matawhero or Bushmere Estate vineyard. After lunch you can make your way back to Gisborne and our famous beaches through the quiet back roads to our shop or call for a pick up at any point.
Bookings are essential if you want to experience the impressive Eastwoodhill during Spring and Autumn.
Eastwoodhill offers either studio rooms or bunk room accommodation depending on your personal preference.
