Raukumara Traverse – 3 day option
This three-day ride crosses the Raukumara Peninsula (yes, that’s the bit sticking out on the East Coast of the North island!). It runs from Opotiki in the eastern Bay of Plenty to the city of Gisborne in Poverty Bay (Turanganui-a-Kiwa). The ride is mostly along spectacular rural gravel roads but also includes a beach track, as well as some asphalt roads. Some serious climbing up to 800 metres is involved on day one which will take you from Opotiki to Motu along the beach track and then the remote Motu Road. Total distance is some 65 kilometres.
Day two takes you from Motu via Matawai to Eastwoodhill along Te Wera Road and Wharekopae Road. Don’t forget to take in the spectacle of the Rere Falls and Rere Rockslide, or even go down this amazing free natural water playground yourself.
Eastwoodhill is New Zealand’s largest arboretum with mind blowing mature European and indigenous trees. Total distance is 75 kilometres, but there are only minor climbs and wonderful downhill sections.
The easy final third day involves some 40 kilometres of sealed quiet road riding, giving you ample time to sample wine from the many wineries you will cycle past when you hit the Poverty Bay Flats close to the end of your ride. Plenty of accommodation options will be available in Gisborne, the world’s most easterly city with spectacular beaches.
- Cycle hire and helmets from Bushaven, Opotiki;
- Bag transfers to your Accomodation in Motu, Eastwoodhill and Gisborne; and
- Four Nights Accommodation, Opotiki, Motu, Eastwoodhill, and Gisborne
